Residents in the UAE have spoken out about the dangerous consequences of cigarettes being thrown from apartment buildings.

It comes as Dubai Civil Defence concluded that the Torch Tower fire in Dubai Marina on August 4 was started by a burning cigarette butt falling into a dry plant.

Residents of high-rises are being reminded to put out their smokes in ashtrays instead of throwing them from balconies.

This Dubai mother describes the moment when a recklessly tossed cigarette hit her six month old daughter when they were walking below a building in the Trade Centre area.
Fire safety experts also say more needs to be done to educate smokers in the UAE about the dangers of throwing cigarettes from balconies.

They’re urging smokers to light-up only when they have access to an ashtray.

Sharon Paul, a training advisor at Al Salama Fire Safety Training, explains why tossing a cigarette from a building is so dangerous.
